Industrial Lead in Omaha- A Brief History

Subject

Occupational and industrial lead exposure in Omaha

Description

This collection lays out the many of the stories of the history of occupational and industrial lead exposure in Omaha between 1890 through 1990, which was the time that the lead industry took root in the Omaha community.

The collection showcases various Omaha lead giants in pictures, like American Smelting and Refining Company, Carter White Lead, Gould Electronics, and the Lawrence Shot Company. There are glimpses of working conditions, such as the buildings themselves and their workers. Moving through the 20th century, the lead industry faced criticism from various organizations, such as labor unions, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The impact of lead on workers, workers’ families, and the Omaha community was unparalleled.
