Introduction to Lead Screening in Omaha: History, Health, and Public Response

Lead contamination has been a problem in Omaha Nebraska for more than a century. It has shaped medical knowledge, community health, and local policy. Health officials and medical professionals were aware of the severity of lead poisoning in smelter workers, but they failed to realize the risk for surrounding communities. The health effects of industrial emissions in the air and dust became increasingly noticeable throughout the years. This exhibit examines Omaha’s first medical observations of childhood exposure, and how that lead to the development of screening programs and public-health interventions. Taken together, its shows how growing scientific awareness contributed to environmental remediation, as well as measures by the EPA to cement lead screenings as an established practice in Omaha.
